Hot damn. I’m back. It’s been a while. Feels weird being back, but good weird. I haven’t been able to attend an 8@8 workout — or any workout for that matter — since April. Stress fracture had me on IR. I ran through the pain for a couple of weeks before going to get it checked out. Doc told me I was one run away from a full break – “stop now or you will end up with a Paul George-like broken leg,” he said.
So, I was in a cast, then a walking boot. Found myself at the Y on the hand-bike. The worst. The Y is like a hospital for F3 pax. It’s sad. Every F3 guy you see there is recovering from something. No one has a good story to tell you; no one is happy to be there. Watching Ice 9 on the stairmaster is depressing. Just don’t ever go there.
After I got the green light to walk without the boot, doc told me to “take it easy.” I wasn’t sure what that meant, so I asked Fishwrap. He didn’t know either. Anyway, I’m back to full speed and ready to party. Literally. My birthday is this week (Thursday). I might be tired Friday morning from too many birthday margaritas, but I won’t let it slow me down. Let’s do this.
For my first week back, I thought I would try to simplify things. Life is complicated enough. Let’s just run. So, that’s what we’ll do. We will start out in one direction, and when your watch beeps at 1 mile, turn around and run it back. We’ll do that four times in four different directions, creating a little “X” for your Strava art collection.
It’s simple, but yet you can choose to play it any way you want. Tempo the first mile out, and recover at the turnaround. Or, you can sprint every other out-and-back. Do what feels right. All you have to remember is to turn around when your watch beeps at the mile mark.
We’ll do it like this:
1.) From the parking lot, run down Selwyn toward Queens Univ., your watch should beep after 1 mile near the Westfield Road intersection. Turn around and run back to the start.
2.) Next, from the parking lot, run down Providence toward uptown; your watch should beep at the Queens Road intersection. Turn around and run it back to the start.
3.) Next, from the parking lot, run down Morehead; your watch should beep close to the Kings Dr. intersection. Turn around and run it back to the start.
4.) Next, from the parking lot, run down Providence toward Christ Church; your watch should beep about halfway up that nasty hill (near Pinewood Circle). Turn around and run it back to the start.
